DIPLOMA IN MASS COMMUNICATION AND JOURNALISM

Paper 1: Sanskrit

Paper 2: Personal grooming and communication skills

Unit I: Introduction

Introduction to communication- Basic forms of communication, process of communication, principles of effective communication.

Unit II: Business Manners

Body language, gestures, dialogue skills, feedback skills, telephone dialogue, telephone etiquette and participating in business meetings.

Unit III: Presentation skills

Tools of presentation, Effective guidelines for presentation, limitations to a good presentation, interactive presentation, overcoming boredom factors in presentation.

Unit IV: Group Communication & Art of effective listening

  • Introduction, significance of group communication, problems in group communication, leadership skills, motivational forces
  • Meetings: Types of meetings, their advantages and disadvantages, conduct of meetings, chairman’s functions, role and responsibilities
  • Listening skills. Blocks to effective listening, improving listening skills, use of silence in communication.

Paper 3: Basics of Journalism & Media

Unit – I: Introduction: Mass Communication & Society.

  • Mass Communication: Meaning & Purpose/ Scope & Relevance to Society, Role of mass communication in developing societies—social changes, democracy and developmental journalism.

Unit – II Introduction to media:

  • Print Media:- Organizational structure,

— Newspapers/Magazines Management: circulations, advertising, editorial, library, production, storekeeping.

  • Electronic Media:- Development of radio and T.V. in India-Satellite TV and emerging media landscape, Entry of private FM broadcasters in India

Unit – III

  • News reporting and Coverage of various beats:- News sources – Types, credibility, protection of sources. Pitfalls and problems in reporting. Beats – Crime, District Courts, Civil Administration, Local politics, Civil bodies, Health, Education, Culture/Festivals, Entertainment Business Reporting, Development Reporting ,Rural Reporting ,Legal Reporting Crime Reporting.

 

  • Editing: Techniques of Editing, News Room organization and operation.

Unit IV: Writing for Newspapers, Television and Radio:

(a)Writing for Print Media:- Principles of writing news stories, articles, opinion and editorial writing for different Print Media.

(b)Writing for television:- News/Program, TV anchoring, techniques of holding interviews, group discussions and making presentations, preparation of scripts for selected television programs.

(c) Television reporting:-

Visualizing news, research and investigation of news, interview techniques; piece to camera and voice over; sequencing and editing news packages; investigative reporting – economic reporting, sports reporting, human interest stories.

— Television news editing: planning, production and compilation of news program. Writing lead-in/intro to news packages like writing headlines, teasers and promos. Formats for TV, news programs.

(d)Writing for Radio:-Radio News/ Program. Writing and editing Radio scripts

Paper 4: Media Ethics and Press Laws

Unit I: Media Ethics– Reporter- Functions, qualities, responsibilities. Functions and responsibilities of Chief Reporter

-Investigative journalism, the issue of responsibility of the Press, the accountability of Journalists and Publishers, Business Media Ethics – Press Laws, State Control vs. Freedom of Media – Broadcasting Bill (Prasar Bharti), Press Council of India –

Unit II: Constitution and Press Laws and the issue of the Freedom of the Press and its control. Law of Libel and Defamation, Contempt of Court and breach of Legislative Privileges, the Right to Information, the Broadcasting Bill.

Unit III: Self Regulation — the Press Council of India. Debates on responsibility and accountability of journalists and publishers and consequences of misreporting, Press Legislature of India

Unit IV: Practical Application –Selected Case Studies of curbs on the Press and struggle for Press Freedom .

Unit III: Introduction to sound technology

1.Basics of sound (Physics of sound and its terminology, Audible frequency response of Human ear, Units of sound, Sound pressure, dynamic range etc.).

2.Difference between sound and music (Tones, timbres and texture).Concept of a Transducer as musical instrument and microphone

3.Acoustic sound and synthetic sounds (Concept of synthesizers, Oscillators, filters etc.) Audio formats and conversion tools (mono & stereo, Diff between channels & Tracks, Wave, mp3, AIFF file types)

Unit IV:

Practice Sessions:

  • Floor Exercises: theatre games, improvisations, exploring situations, scene building
  • Reading and analysis of scene excerpts and working out sequences and scenes
  • Scenic arrangement—blocking and mise-en-scene
  • Role play—developing character, developing relations with other characters
  • Back-stage work—management, planning, execution
  • Writing Projects: reviewing any current production; writing a sample ‘theatre review’ of a read text

Paper 4: Fundamentals of Directing

Unit I: Developing Your Idea

From Idea to Framework: This section will help you answer the question ‘How do I choose my main story?’ The ‘Writing Backwards’ approach will be demonstrated. There are only eight basic stories or genres, which will be expounded and illustrated in this section. It also includes an introduction to the Three-Act Linear structure, the one-liner, log-lines, theme title, background and setting, and subplots. There will be some discussions on the cost, research, and medium.

Unit II: Creating Your Characters

The section provides you with the guiding principles for creating characters and covers aspects such as choosing a name, creating 3-D characters, defining character functions/categories, identifying the protagonist, generating the character biography analysis/checklist, building the back story, identifying the secondary and minor characters, ascertaining the cast design, creating the counter-character chart, identifying character flaws, and establishing audience identification with the characters.

Unit III: Deep Structure

This section provides inputs on how to develop the detailed structure of the story. This requires you to define the sequence of the scenes, create a scene dialogue, write the subtext, enhance emotions, and inlay the character motivation. The section also discusses techniques for creating momentum such as building tension, pacing information in the screenplay. Students develop skills for Award winning national and international campaigns will be taken up for discussions. A supplemental segment on public service advertising (PSA) is also included, which trains students on how to generate ideas and give cinematic treatment to PSAs.

Unit IV:

1.Directorial elements: Understanding of shot taking: shot breakdown: mood lighting: color coding and look of the film: shot composition: mise-en-scene: dynamisation of time and space: various kinds of continuity: cinematic transition from one time and space to another. Music appreciation: Painting appreciation: Study of various video games for camera angles, styles etc.

 

2.Screenplay Format: Your Visual Language: Developing the screenplay layout involves making key annotations on pages, scene headings, scene direction, camera angles, montages, paragraphing, entrances and exits, character Cues, actor direction, dialogue, and sound.
